CPR for the Professional Rescuer

The CPR for the Professional Rescuer (CPRO) course is designed for lifeguards, first responders, healthcare providers, and public safety professionals who require a higher level of training in emergency cardiovascular care. This course focuses on advanced rescue skills, teamwork, and rapid response to breathing and cardiac emergencies.

Course Objectives

Participants will learn to:

  • Perform high-quality CPR on adults, children, and infants as both a single rescuer and part of a team.

  • Use an automated external defibrillator (AED) effectively and safely.

  • Provide ventilations using a resuscitation mask and bag-valve-mask (BVM).

  • Recognize and respond to respiratory and cardiac arrest scenarios.

  • Manage choking emergencies in victims of all ages.

  • Coordinate care with other rescuers and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel.

  • Understand legal considerations and scene safety principles for professional rescuers.

Requirements for Completion

To successfully complete the course, participants must:

  • Complete all required online learning modules before the in-person session.

  • Actively participate in all skills practice and team-based scenarios.

  • Demonstrate competency in all required CPR and rescue skills.

  • Pass the final written exam with a score of 80% or higher.

Certification Details

Upon successful completion, participants will earn an American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (CPRO) certification, valid for two years. This certification meets professional-level training requirements for aquatic safety personnel, lifeguards, and other emergency responders.

Blended Learning Format

This course uses a blended learning model, combining interactive online training with an in-person skills session. The online portion covers essential knowledge and allows participants to learn at their own pace. The in-person class provides hands-on practice, skill demonstration, and scenario-based assessments to ensure real-world readiness.

Next Steps After Registration

After registering, your instructor will contact you via email to confirm your class details and provide a link to the American Red Cross Learning Center. Through this link, you’ll be enrolled in the online portion of the course, which must be completed prior to the in-person session. The instructor’s email will also include details about class time, location, and what to bring to the session.
